Is there a generational shift in preferences for forest carbon sequestration vs. preservation of agricultural landscapes?

چکیده
Abstract Afforestation and reforestation are considered important measures for climate change mitigation. Because the land area available tree planting may serve multiple purposes, striking right balance between goals other objectives is crucial. We conducted a survey of Norwegian population to investigate potential land-use conflicts that arise from executing large-scale afforestation programme. Respondents were presented with three alternatives replace formerly grazed agricultural land. used manipulated landscape photos elicit their underlying value orientations. combined correspondence analysis latent class regression models reveal preference heterogeneity. Our grouped respondents into classes, 24%, 24% 52%, respectively, expressing forest carbon sequestration, recreation or agriculture as most crucial function be retained. Birth year emerged strong predictor membership. Specifically, generations born before 1970 more inclined support continuation landscapes, while those in 1980 later showed stronger inclination towards natural succession sequestration recreational purposes. Quantitatively, every 10-year reduction age increased odds respondent belonging forestation (relative class) by factor 2. Interestingly, even among who classified concerned, forests 50% likely preferred over monoculture spruce plantation policy option. This suggests there public resistance mitigation purposes Norway.

Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Soils
Although it is common to alternate between till and no-till practices, past research has considered farmers’ tillage options to be limited to the dichotomous choice of whether or not to switch to a long-term no-till regime. This paper expands farmers’ options and models their choices of tillage frequency. Less frequent tilling sequesters more carbon but permits a greater accumulation of weeds, ...

A major problem being faced by human society is that the global temperature is believed to be rising due to human activity that releases carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, i.e., global warming. The major culprit is thought to be fossil fuel burning, which is releasing increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The problem of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide can be addressed a n...
متن کاملInterventions for Achieving Sustainability in Tropical Forest and Agricultural Landscapes
The rapid expansion of commodity agriculture in tropical forest landscapes is a key driver of deforestation. To meet the growing demand from a more prosperous and expanding global population, it is imperative to develop sustainable commodity supply chains that support higher agricultural productivity, and that enable improved environmental, economic, and social outcomes. Interventions by commun...
متن کاملCarbon Sequestration in Central European Forest Ecosystems
The forests of Central Europe play an important role in the retention of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Carbon sequestration is rarely the main objective of forest management and is often an underappreciated by-effect of practical forest management, whereas timber production and protection against natural hazards in mountain regions are the main forest functions. Climate change is expected to alte...
متن کاملComparison of Carbon and Nitrogen Sequestration in Soils Under Plantations, Natural Forest and Agricultural Farm Land Uses in Arjan Plain in the Fars Province
The carbon sequestaration by plants and soil is one of the easiest and the most econimical ways to reduce atmosphere carbon. This study was conducted on the planted land use of Fraxinus rotundifolia, Cupressus arizonica, obinia pseudoacacia L., Elaeagnus angustifolia, Cedrus libani, and Quercus brantii (persica) in the Arjan plain of Fars province. For each plantation land use, there were three...
